"I made a lot of mistakes in my youth.

I want children in our community who have made mistakes to know, first-hand, that they have a bright future and that negative issues they have experienced will not hold them down.

In my youth, I entered a in-patient drug rehabilitation program. I attended AA and NA meetings and overcame substance abuse addiction. Despite going to rehab, I was not judged negatively by society. I graduated high school as my class president, became a law enforcement officer, joined the navy, earned a doctorate degree and served in the White House for two US Presidents.

Yes, we all make mistakes in our youth, but overcoming those challenges demonstrates strength, and that is the message I want McKinney youth to hear, loud and clear. The only obstacles are those they cho0se not to overcome."
